LMC: Do you keep a collection of movie props, your work or work of others?

MM:  I do have some souvenirs from Titanic, an autographed life vest. I try to collect posters from all the films I’ve worked on.. but I’m not much of a collector of props.  I used to be a huge packrat.. I got over that.  Most of my movie posters are not even framed. I don’t have enough wall space for them.

LMC: Have you ever sculpted a slip latex mask you intended on selling?

MMNot a slip latex mask.. I’m trying to come up with some generic Foam Appliances that are different from what’s available.  I have a seamless bald cap that I can bake up.

LMC: Are you creating them for sale or for your own needs on the job?

MM Yes. Both. I’ve already used them for both. I’d like to see a really good very old age makeup made in multiple pieces.. especially a good neck. I started one but needed it too quickly to spend any real time on it. I molded it unfinished so that  could have it in time for Able Edwards.

LMC: Have you ever collected latex masks?

MM: I had a few when I was little.. but I’d rather make them than collect them.  I don’t like stuff that collects dust.

LMC: What do you do in your spare time?

MM: Wood working, movie watching, cooking Asian food, traveling when I can.

LMC: What movies do you enjoy?  What books or magazines?

MM: How do I put this.. I actually like chick flicks . Good psychological thrillers.. Surprisingly, I’m not a horror movie fan.. they’re usually pretty bad.. I’ve read the script through for the next Jeepers Creepers.. it’s pretty good. I love books in general. I don’t understand people that don’t read.

LMC: What do you read?

MM: Biographies, any Fiction that’s not Sci-Fi or Fantasy.  I have a group of friends all around the country that trades books back and forth. We all buy one and mail it around. We seem to have similar taste. One of my favorite books of all time  is Geek Love.. another is Atlas Shrugged. You couldn’t choose more different books.. but both have their attraction to me.  I’m surprised that Geek Love hasn’t been abridged and made into a movie. If I could get the rights, I have a good grasp on how the story should be broken down.

LMC: If you had all the money you would need, what would you spend your days doing?

MM: Wood working. I love the smell of a good woodshop!

LMC: What do you create in wood?

MM: I used to make magic tricks. Now I do home projects, I designed and built my couch and loveseat, I almost majored in furniture design in college.

LMC: If you never became an FX guy, what profession would you be in?

MM: I’d probably still be starving doing theatre. It doesn’t pay well. .but it’s incredibly satisfying!

LMC: What makes you happy?

MM: Working and getting enough time and $ to do it. I’m not happy very often. Seriously, just working makes me happy.. and my cat, Jack.

LMC: Any pet peeves?

MM: I could spend DAYS!  People that saw a mask once and call themselves makeup artists.  Makeup artists that take a  job and then get on the message boards online and ask the rest of us how to do it.  People that graduate from makeup school and think they can department head films and will do it for NOTHING!  Producers that don’t pay a kit rental because they think it’s not necessary really peeve me off! Makeup schools are another pet peeve.. if I told you what I think of Joe Blasco, and virtually every other makeup school,  not only couldn’t you print it, but I’d probably get sued. Basically, I don’t think it’s fair that they graduate a dozen students a month and let them think they are qualified to do makeup. They’re delusional!
