LMC:
What is your slip latex paint formula?
RL:
I sort
of eyeball paint mixes now. I haven't thought about ratios in
a long time, and sometimes, I will dilute things more for
translucency and simply do more layers. Bud has easily 20
layers of color passes on him.
I like all techniques, Rubber cement, Pax, on occasion Balloon
Rubber
LMC:
What did you use on Bud?
RL:
TOP SECRET !!!, I
chose rubber cement paints for him, but I would like to try that new
“no tack” Prosaide Pax formula sometime.
LMC:
How about some tips for painting masks?
RL:
Don’t think of
it as a mask, think of it as skin and actual pigment !
Just because it is a
mask doesn’t mean it has to look like one ! Of course that means
more paint and time spent on it.
LMC:
What slip latex masks have you sculpted through the years and in
present day?
RL:
None that were overly publicized, but I believe a mask collecting
book is coming out and I should be featured in it somewhere.
LMC:
Have you always been sculpting masks throughout your career? If
not, what lead you to start them?
RL: I always liked them and its fun to just do masks or model kits,
sometimes I just feel like doing fun stuff. When you don’t have a
deadline, you can do something fun and stay in practice too.
LMC:
Have you done any mass produced masks?
RL:
I prefer private commissions or limited issues, mass produced means
cutting corners or handing it off to a sweat shop usually and that
effects the piece.
LMC:
Do you have a collection of your own?
RL:
Its in boxes on the East coast, I am afraid to get the boxes and see
what condition they are in. I don’t have the space in L.A. to
display them properly.
LMC:
What’s your favorite mask done by someone else?
RL:
There are so many great masks out there, I’ve always liked Death
Studios Barlow mask, even though I might take a whack at it for
myself.
LMC:
Ah, such a relatively simple design, yet very powerful and effective
especially with Jeff Death’s paintjob.
RL:
It is an excellent rendition, pretty creepy !!!! Can I get a free
one now Jeff ?? :)
LMC:
What do you do in your spare time?
RL:
Sleep !! I always
have stuff going on and never get enough sleep. My version of “
spare time “ doesn’t seem to be the same as others.
LMC:
What movies do you enjoy? What books or magazines?
RL:
All kinds of movies, I don’t just stick to horror. I have been
reading a lot of biographies lately, BRUCE CAMPBELL’S is a great one
!! Christopher Lee’s is a great read as well, his life sounds like a
movie in itself.
LMC:
If you had all the money you would need, what would you spend your
days doing?
RL:
All the sculptures and displays I could fit into a 456 room mansion,
and then go check out some castles overseas. I would also have to
sweep Jennifer Connely off her feet, had a crush on her since
Labyrinth.
LMC:
If you never became an FX guy, what profession would you be in?
RL:
I don’t know but it would probably suck !
I might know the
“specials of the day”, and wear lots of “ Flair “ on my vest.
I was miserable
doing regular jobs, even though they offer more job security.
I thought about
doing prosthesis work for amputees, I still might. That utilizes my
skills and makes people happier, sorta cool !
LMC:
Where will you be in 5 years? How about 20 years?
RL: Hopefully not dead from the chemicals we
use in the FX Industry Actually……
I don’t want to know, surprise me !! DOES IT INVOLVE SWIMSUIT
MODELS AND A SNOWED IN CABIN??
LMC:
What’s the meaning of life?
RL:
The last Monty Python film !!!! Not as
funny as Grail or Life of Brian !! But I love the fat guy exploding
.
I don’t know…If I
knew that I would have my own infomercial after hours on Sci-Fi
channel and be rich !!
If I had to guess, its to Do whatever makes you happy without
hurting someone else.
LMC:
What makes you happy?
RL:
Watching
John Candy movies, finishing a project, being complimented by my
peers.
OH, and this Mashed Potato pizza I had in Pittsburgh, I’ve never
found it anywhere else but MY GOD it was good :)
LMC:
Any pet peeves?
RL:
Modern filmmaking, remakes, destroying films that had already been
done- GEORGE !!!
LMC:
Any words of wisdom?
RL:
Wear a respirator, Gloves and
Goggles !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Don’t take chances with chemicals, they are
not your friends!!! You might
cry when you read all the health/warning labels on FX related
chemicals. We don’t age well, we fx guys !!
Keep pushing yourself to do better and new
things !!
Thanx All,
I will have a new site up soon with
my work, where I can be contacted for commission work, when it
happens it will be at…
